If an employee has changed their given name, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was your job – as their employer – to tell HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) about this change of name.
In fact, it’s actually the individual’s own responsibility to tell HMRC about this change and to update their PAYE/NI and self-assessment details accordingly.
Changing your name with HMRC
There are two key scenarios where you’d need to inform HMRC about your change of name:
- If you’re being paid a salary or pension through PAYE – click here to fill out form 64-8 and change your personal details
- If you’re registered for self-assessment tax – log in with your Government Gateway details to change your name details online
If both scenarios apply to you (you’re both employed and earning income outside of PAYE) then you need to update your name in both places.
Changing your gender with HMRC
If you change sex, your name and gender will be automatically updated. This will happen when your Gender Recognition Certificate is received by HMRC.
There’s more information on how HMRC will update your gender details on their website here
