When it comes to completing your VAT return you’ve got two basic choices:
- You get your accountant to do it, and pay them to look after your VAT affairs as your nominated tax agent.
- You set the business up with cloud accounting software – which will include templates for completing your VAT return – and do the return yourself.
Unless you’re reasonably confident in accounting and tax, we’d advise going for option 1 and asking your accountant to take care of all your VAT tasks.
Proof of purchase for VAT costs
Remember, when you’re claiming back VAT costs on purchases you’ve made that you’ll need to have some form of documentary proof of the purchase – this applies whether you’re doing the VAT yourself, or if your accountant is doing it.

Use the right VAT category
If you decide to complete your VAT yourself, you’ll also need to understand the different VAT categories, so the transactions can be coded correctly in your VAT return.
