If you want to change your VAT periods there are two ways to do this
- You log in to your VAT online account (your Government Gateway account) and request the change online. You can do this yourself, or your accountant can do it on your behalf as your tax agent.
- You make the request by filling out form VAT484, the form that’s used to inform HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) of any changes to your business details – you can download the form here.
It’s relatively quick and easy to do. Once HMRC receive your request, they’ll review the business case and will contact you to make the change.
There is some admin to do, however, as you may be required to submit a return for two months or four months, depending on the change requested. This means tweaking the periods calculated by your accounting software and manually inputting the combined box amounts into HMRC online – something it’s well worth asking your accountant to do for you.
